410.822 (B): Conduct of Inspections

An occupant shall be informed of his/her right to a comprehensive inspection at the start of said inspection or during your telephone interview. A comprehensive inspection will be carried out if the occupant so requests.

At a minimum the alleged violation must be investigated, along with conditions deemed to endanger or impair health or safety.

When you conduct an inspection first find out:

  • How many rooms are in the dwelling/dwelling unit
  • Age and type of dwelling/dwelling unit
  • Owner information (name, address, phone)
  • Occupant information (number, contact information and age of children, if any)

You may want to start your inspection with a brief drawing of the floor plan. A systematic approach ensures a complete and accurate inspection.

Remember that sometimes occupants will start to tell you how to inspect. Be courteous and try to explain what you’re doing. DO NOT give legal advice. That is not your role. Also do not put your self in a position that it looks like your taking sides. You are there to determine if the dwelling/dwelling unit is in compliance with the regulations.
