Message from Bobbie White, associate dean of research – Please see the message below from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation about a funding opportunity for junior faculty.


Doris Duke Clinical Scientist Development Award Program
The purpose of the Doris Duke Clinical Scientist Development Award Program is to provide support for mentored research to junior faculty members with an M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. (physician-scientists) working in any disease area as they begin their careers as independent clinical researchers.

The 2010 Clinical Scientist Development Awards are being offered to eligible junior faculty members at a funding level of $135,000 per year for 3 years.

For the purposes of this award program, clinical research is defined as research conducted with human subjects with direct application to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, or cure of any human disease.

The Foundation’s definition of clinical research includes:

  • Studies on the etiology and pathogenesis of human disease
  • Therapeutic interventions
  • Clinical trials
  • Epidemiological studies
  • Disease control research
  • Operations and implementation research


Each U.S. accredited, degree-granting institution may nominate up to two candidates.

Applicants must:

  • Be a physician-scientist conducting clinical research in any disease area;
  • Have received an M.D. or a foreign equivalent from an accredited institution;
  • Be working in a U.S. degree-granting institution, but do not have to be a U.S. citizen;
  • Have a full-time faculty level position not higher than the Assistant Professor level; and
  • Have been appointed to their first full-time faculty level position between January 1, 2005 and January 1, 2010. (All full-time post-fellowship Instructor level positions will be considered full-time faculty level appointments).


Note: Applicants are encouraged to propose research that is innovative, interfaces with different scientific disciplines, and has the potential of pushing the frontiers of clinical research.

Internal Review Process: Boston University is permitted to nominate two individuals. If we have more than two interested candidates, an internal review committee will select the final applicants. Faculty wishing to be considered for nomination should send the following materials by Friday, October 30, 2009, to Jeanne Louise Washington, Research Administrator, Office of Research Administration, Building M, Suite 921:

  • A one-page summary of your research
  • A letter from your research mentor or departmental chair
  • Your email address and your mentor's email address
  • The exact date of your first faculty appointment
  • Your CV


Remarks: Please remember that applicants must work with their department administrators and Research Administration to ensure that applications are reviewed appropriately prior to submission.
