Anna Knapp, an International Health concentrator, and Priscilla Padilla, a Maternal and Child Health concentrator, were recognized at BUSPH's Community Partners Appreciation Luncheon. For accomplishments related to their practica experiences, Knapp and Padilla each received a Student Award for Excellence in Public Health Practice.

Knapp worked with the community development team at the Luke Clinic of Moyobamba, Peru, to help install a clean-water system for a remote marginalized village of indigenous people known as the Arguaruna. Her activities included surveying household nutrition practices, teaching basic hygiene at clinics, assisting with basic first aid for infants and children under age 10, and helping with food distribution.

Padilla's practicum, at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, involved investigating and determining state-wide maternal characteristics and behavioral factors that are associated with low-birth weight infants. It was hypothesized that low birth weight was positively associated with maternal race and maternal age.

Padilla graduated in January 2006, and Knapp plans to graduate in September 2006.
