Law and Public Health (JD/MPH) |
|
The JD/MPH Law
and Public Health dual degree program is an accelerated
four-year course of study leading
to the award of both the JD
and MPH degrees. The program
reflects the University's longstanding
recognition of the role of law
in protecting public health
and safety. Just as law is central
to protecting public health,
knowledge of public health disciplines
is essential to today's health
law practice. Protecting and
enhancing the health of populations,
as well as individuals, demand
multidisciplinary training to
identify and resolve complex
problems of major social and
economic importance. The joint
program is designed to train
qualified students for leadership
roles in both the public and
private sectors. The University's
outstanding faculty and research
resources - including the country's
largest concentration of health
law faculty and courses - provide
a rigorous, integrated curriculum
in law and public health.

participation in the dual degree
program. Applicants may apply
simultaneously to the two Schools,
or, alternatively, students enrolled
in the School of Law may apply
during their first year of law
study for admission to the MPH
degree program.
Students admitted to the JD/MPH
Law and Public Health Program
enroll in the School of Law for
each of the first three years
of study, but take two School
of Public Health courses in both
the second and third years of
study for credit toward both the
JD and MPH degrees. The JD degree
is awarded following the completion
of three years of study. The fourth
year of study is in residence
at the School of Public Health,
which gives advanced-standing
credit for four public health-related
courses taken at the School of
Law.
