Research at BU School of Public Health |
The
overall goal of the School's research program is to identify and
analyze factors that imperil the public's health and well-being, and to
create and evaluate programs designed to prevent or ameliorate these
public health challenges. Faculty members who conduct research bring
the most up-to-date experiences and findings from the field into the
classroom.
Every
department has an active program of research and scholarship that is
designed to foster the health and welfare of populations. The School's
research efforts span the spectrum from large epidemiologic studies to
basic bench science. The School endeavors to develop new knowledge in
public health across a range of broad themes, including:
-
Determining
the causes of injury, disease and disability and using this information
to inform the development of public health policies and preventive
interventions
-
Determining
the underlying molecular mechanisms and behavioral determinants of
infectious diseases, cancer, and chronic diseases and applying that
knowledge to solve practical public health problems

-
Evaluating
the effectiveness of programs designed to improve the health of the
public, and developing methods to increase their effectiveness
-
Developing more efficient and equitable means for delivering health services
-
Evaluating the role of law, the legal process and ethics in public health policy and practice
Because
the investigation and resolution of complex public health problems cannot be successfully achieved within any one field, the School fosters
communication and collaboration across all its departments and centers
to enhance both the quality and quantity of the School's research.
