Welcome to
the Boston University School
of Public Health! We are excited to introduce you to our school and help you
learn what we have to offer.
Our
students are bright and capable. They come from around the world, with a wide
range of academic and professional backgrounds. Our students are recent college
graduates, practicing health care professionals, and other working
professionals looking for a career change. No matter what the students'
previous experiences are, the binding commonality lies in their commitment to
making the world a healthier place.
Our
students are committed to improving the health of populations in the classroom
and in the field. BUSPH students are active students, both in the greater Boston area, around the US, and the world. Students have
the opportunity to get involved in the greater Boston
area volunteering at homeless shelters serving meals and going into classrooms
during National Public Health Week to engage Boston area high school students in public
health conversations. Our students organize fundraising events to raise money
for insecticide treated bed nets to prevent malaria and town hall meetings to
educate the community on issues such as the global food crisis and the genocide
in Darfur.
The field
of public health offers exciting and diverse career pathways. No matter what
your career trajectory, you must be grounded in public health core competencies
and their applications. We offer a range of programs and degrees designed to
provide a comprehensive, well-rounded education in all facets of public health
at both the master's and doctoral level. Our MPH and DrPH programs are designed
to prepare practitioners of public health who work in program development and
implementation. The MS and PhD programs are most often pursued by those focused
on academic and research careers who tend to work in academia and research.
The
educational program here at BUSPH uses a three pronged method of preparing
students to be effective public health practitioners. At our school, education,
research, and practice are combined to create a well rounded and unique
educational experience for students. BUSPH faculty members are not only
incredible educators; they are world renowned researchers and public health
practitioners. They bring their research projects and experiences from the
field into the classroom engaging students in conversations about current
public health topics and issues.
It's one
thing to learn about the field of public health in the classroom; it's another
to apply what you learn in the real world filled with complex issues and
problems specific to each setting and population. Last year, BUSPH students
participated in practica at 248 sites in Boston
and around the world in settings that included community-based nonprofits,
government agencies, NGOs, and research institutions.
We believe
that the combination of research, education, and practice unique to the Boston
University School of Public Health creates an ideal environment in which to
study public health. Through this combination, students are equipped to become
the next generation of public health leaders.
