Philippines Exchange Program |
Program
in International Health Practice
The Program
in International Health Practice (PIHP) in the Philippines
provides Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH)
students with the opportunity to fulfill the field practice
requirement, by spending either a Fall or Spring semester
attending classes at the College of Public Health, University
of the Philippines Manila (CPH-UPM), and participating
in a number of field practice activities in a developing
country setting.
This 16 credit
program is particularly appropriate for International
Health (IH) concentrators but may also appeal to concentrators
in other departments. It combines three essential parts
of your international health education:
-
gain experience living in a developing country,
-
earn 16 credits (8 elective/8 IH), and
-
meet the field practice requirement.
In addition
to coursework and field placement activities organized
by CPH-UPM, students also participate in a community
health and finance immersion experience led by adjunct
faculty member, Sr. Dulce Corazon Velasco, MD, MPH.
This introduces students to how rural communities finance
their health programs.
Applications to the program are considered on a rolling basis, so
students are advised to apply early, as space is limited.
Deadlines to apply for the January to May program is
October 15, and for the August to December program,
is April 15.
Prior to embarking
on this program, students should have completed core
courses in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Social and
Behavioral Sciences, plus either IH 704 or IH 700. Also,
consistent with BUSPH regulations governing field practice,
students must have taken at least 12 credits of coursework
at the School.
