For International Students
All international students must submit the appropriate materials for the program to which he or she has applied via SOPHAS. In addition, international students are required to ensure that the following items are submitted to SOPHAS.

Non-US Transcripts
Transcripts from foreign institutions bearing the schools stamp or seal shoudl be submitted in signed, sealed envelopes directly by the institution to SOPHAS using the SOPHAS Official Transcript Request Form. Clear, legible photocopies must be provided of all official diplomas or certificates.

All materials require precise, word-for-word English translations. Since the transcript will be going to SOPHAS directly from the foreign institution, the applicant can base the translation on their own copy of the official academic transcripts. Translations must be completed by a recognized translation organization. The School encourages a course-by-course academic credential evaluation performed and submitted to SOPHAS by the World Education Service (http://www.wes.org/) in lieu of foreign institution credentials. The SOPHAS Web site lists addtional translation resources that are also acceptable.

English Language Exam All international students whose native language is not English must provide results of the Test of English as a Second Language (TOEFL) or the academic module of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). If an international applicant's native language is English, or he/she has graduated from a college/university in which English was the language of instruction, an applicant may request a waiver of the TOEFL. Those requesting a waiver should submit a completed pdf TOEFL and IELTS Waiver Request Form, along with supporting documentation demonstrating that the language of instruction at the applicant's university was English, sent directly to Boston University School of Public Health Office of Admissions.

Boston University School of Public Health strongly encourages submission of the TOEFL regardless of whether an international student has received their higher education instruction in English.

The GRE is biased towards western English speakers, and submitting a TOEFL ensures that our office can appropriately evaluate an international students ability to communicate and learn in English.

Test Required Score
TOEFL ibt 100 or higher
TOEFL pbt 600 or higher
IELTS 6.0 (total band score)

English language exam scores may not be more than two years old.

Official TOEFL and IELTS score reports must be sent directly to SOPHAS. Photocopies of test score reports or unofficial records will not be accepted. Please visit our reporting codes webpage for test specific reporting codes.
