PAMP: Pharmaceutical Assessment, Management and Policy |
The Pharmaceutical Assessment, Management and Policy (PAMP) Program is available to Master of Public Health students who are interested in careers in or related to the pharmaceutical industry including employment settings such as pharmaceutical/biotech companies, pharmaceutical benefit management companies, consulting firms, and state, federal or international agencies that interface with the pharmaceutical industry. Students interested in PAMP submit a PAMP entry form to the PAMP Program Director, Professor Lewis Kazis. The program is geared to full-time students who enter the MPH program in the fall semester, though other options are possible. The PAMP program, one of the few in the country, is directed by Professor Lewis Kazis, an international expert in pharmaceutical policy and research. Dr. Kazis is also director of the Center for Assessment of Pharmaceutical Practices (CAPP) one of the School's major research centers. PAMP is run by CAPP as part of the center's educational mission. Dr. Warren Kaplan serves as International Health Coordinator for the PAMP Program. Dr. Kaplan has over 20 years experience in the legal and public health sectors as an attorney, manager, project leader, consultant and policy analyst. Dr. Kazis and others in CAPP/PAMP have conducted research sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Bank. Dr. Kazis' group and faculty in PAMP also have served as consultants for major pharmaceutical companies including, Merck & Company, Pfizer, Eli Lilly & Company, Johnson and Johnson, GlaxoSmithKline, Novartis, Sanofi-Aventis, Abbott Laboratories, Genzyme, Wyeth, Amgen and Boehringer Ingelheim. PAMP provides students with an understanding of the business and regulatory environment in which pharmaceuticals are developed and distributed, and with a set of analytic skills for addressing critical issues in the management of pharmaceuticals including health outcomes and quality of life, cost-effectiveness, and prescribing patterns of providers. PAMP includes a range of course work in pharmaceuticals to give students an exposure to contemporary problems from both domestic and global perspectives. The PAMP program prepares students for positions in both the public and private sectors. This includes positions in federal and state government agencies, the pharmaceutical industry, contracting research organizations, and international agencies, to name a few. Goal of PAMP To provide students with the knowledge and expertise to address pharmaceutical issues from a public health perspective. Objectives of PAMP At completion of the PAMP program, the student should be able to: 1. Identify major pharmaceutical issues and priorities in the context of public health domestically and globally. 2. Discuss the range of pharmaceutical research, policy and programmatic interventions facing the global public health community including the relevant health policy and management experiences of different organizations, nationally and internationally. 3. Evaluate pharmaceutical programs in the context of economics, organization, regulation, and politics. 4. Hands on participation in the design and implementation of policy and program interventions to address pharmaceutical issues in a domestic and global public health context. 5. Contribute to the design, conduct and interpretation of research on pharmaceutical- related topics.
