FAQ's

Q: What is the Non-Degree Student Program?
A: The Non-Degree Student program at the Boston University School of Public Health is designed to allow students who are not currently matriculated into a degree program at Boston University, to take School of Public Health (SPH) courses. Although Non-Degree Students are not required to provide formal proof of previous academic or professional experience, they are held to the same high standard of excellence as all students at BUSPH.

Q: How is taking a course as a Non-Degree Student different from taking a course as a degree candidate?
A: Taking a course as a non-degree student is very similar to taking a course as a degree candidate, and non-degree students must meet the same academic standards and pay the same tuition and fees as any part-time degree candidate at the SPH. Non-degree students are expected to meet course pre-requisites, follow the same academic policies and pay the same tuition as SPH degree candidates.

Q: Who can take courses as a Non-Degree Student?
A: Anyone who is eligible to take coursework on a part time basis and who has an earned bachelor's degree is welcome to take up to eight (8) credits total as a non-degree student. Individuals to whom this registration option may appeal are: potential School of Public Health Students, public health professionals, MDs interested in learning more about the field of Public Health, and others working currently in health care or medical professions.

Q: Can BU and BMC employees be Non-Degree Students?
A: Yes! Employees of Boston University and Boston Medical Center are welcome to take classes as Non-Degree Students. Employees retain their previously issued BU ID and e-mail addresses. It is important that ALL employees note their employee status in the requested area on their registration form, in order to prevent the creation of a duplicate ID. Individuals with a prior educational or employment affiliation with Boston University will likely already have a BU ID number. Please note your prior affiliation even if you do not remember your ID. Employees wishing to use their Tuition Remission benefit should contact their Benefits Office for more information.

Q: If I take courses as a Non-Degree Student prior to my admission, will they still count toward my degree?
A: Yes, in most cases. Courses taken as a Non-Degree Student will be automatically applied toward your degree, as long as the courses are taken within five (5) years of your admission to BUSPH and any minimum grade requirements are met. Taking a class or two prior to the start of your degree program at BUSPH is a great way of getting to know the School of Public Health and the Boston University Medical Campus. Students who have been formally admitted to BUSPH for the fall semester who would like to take courses in the summer semester immediately preceding register as Non-Degree Students for the Summer session. Please note that Non-Degree students are not eligible for federal or institutional financial aid for that summer semester, regardless of their future program status.

Q: How many credits may I take as a Non-Degree Student?
A: Non-Degree students may take up to 8 total credits without additional permissions, with the option of taking up to 16 total credits with permission from the Assistant Dean of Admissions, Judith Hull ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ).  Students who do not meet aademic or professional standards may be stopped from further registration.

Q: How much does it cost to be a Non-Degree Student?
A: Non-degree students pay the same tuition and fees as part-time degree candidates at the School of Public Health. Tuition charges are determined by Boston University, and may vary by academic year. In academic year 2011-2012, the per credit rate is $1,276. Non-degree students also pay a $40 registration fee each semester of registration. Additional information regarding Boston University tuition and fees may be found at the Student Accounting Services website.

Getting Started

Please allow at least three weeks for non-degree student registrations to be processed once you have submitted a registration form. Review the academic calendars and refund schedules prior to registration. Consult the academic calendar and Course Meeting Dates pages.

Non-degree students are allowed to complete a total of eight (8) credits before matriculating to BUSPH and are encouraged to contact the Office of Admissions for more information regarding admissions policies and deadlines.

Registering
  1. Review the Non-Degree Student Registration Packet, which contains a list of suggested classes. Students must meet prerequisite requirements for courses in which they seek to register.
  2. Submit the online Non-Degree Student Registration Form.  The form will automatically be sent to the SPH Registrar's Office when you hit the submit button, and you will receive a confirmation that it was sent.
    • Please make sure you complete the registration form for Non-Degree Students, and to list your current e-mail address on your registration form--e-mail will be the primary form of communication between you and BUSPH's Registrar's Office.
  3. Submitting a Non-Degree Student Registration Form does not guarantee your enrollment in a course. You will receive confirmation of your enrollment in BUSPH courses by e-mail after your registration has been processed.
    • Until you receive an e-mail enrollment confirmation from the BUSPH Registrar's Office, you are not enrolled for a course. If you have previously taken courses from Boston University and still have access to your BU e-mail address, you may log on to the Student Link to verify your enrollment. You may also use Student Link to view your grades, transcript, and personal information.
  4. Contact the SPH Registrar's Office if you have any further questions.

After Registration
  1. You will need a BU e-mail address before the start of class. If you do not already have a current BU ID and e-mail, take a minute to learn about getting your BU ID Card and email account.
  2. Non-degree students pay the same tuition and fees as regular BUSPH degree candidates. After you have established your BU e-mail account, use it to log in to the Student Link in order to view your tuition bill. Tuition for Non-degree Students will be due on the same day as new degree candidates. View the appropriate Non-Degree Student Registration Packet or visit the Student Accounting Services Payment Deadline Page for specific deadlines.
  3. You can pay your student bill online at the Student Accounting Services website. Failure to receive a paper bill does not excuse students from the payment deadline.
