Faculty Position, Health Economist/Health Outcomes Analyst
Center for Global Health and Development

The Center for Global Health and Development (CGHD) has an opening for a health economist or other quantitative health outcomes analyst with interest and experience in conducting applied outcomes, cost, and cost-effectiveness analysis in low and middle income countries. This is a Boston-based position at the level of assistant or associate professor.

Background:
The CGHD is a multidisciplinary research unit committed to improving public health and promoting social and economic development in the developing world. CGHD researchers hold faculty appointments in the Boston University School of Public Health and School of Medicine, in the Departments of International Health, Epidemiology, Infectious Diseases, Pediatrics, and others. Research activities are funded by a range of international donors, including the U.S. Government (USAID,CDC, NIH), the World Health Organization, and private foundations.

One of the CGHD's largest research programs aims to understand and strengthen the global response to HIV/AIDS, and in particular to evaluate and improve the prevention, care, treatment, and mitigation interventions currently underway in Africa and Asia. New opportunities to conduct applied economic evaluation have created an opening for an additional research scientist to contribute to multiple studies and serve as the principal investigator for one or two.

Responsibilities: The current opening is for a versatile health economist or epidemiologist with experience in health costing who can both provide statistical and economic analysis support to study teams and take leadership on individual studies. Initial responsibilities will include substantial technical involvement in studies and modeling of the outcomes, costs, and cost-effectiveness of HIV and TB interventions in Africa. Other responsibilities, new projects, and new areas of work can be developed based on the researcher's interests and abilities. The position is likely to require approximately 10-20% time overseas, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa. Teaching responsibilities in the degree programs of Boston University will depend on the candidate’s abilities and the need for course instructors.

Requirements:
Doctoral degree in economics, epidemiology, or a related field (e.g. public health, public policy). Candidates with primary training in epidemiology, clinical medicine, or another field with interest and experience in health economic evaluation will be considered.

  • Technical competence in cost and cost-effectiveness analysis and statistical analysis.
