Clinical Research Scientist
Center for Global  Health and Development


The Center for Global Health and Development (CGHD) at Boston University has an opening for a Clinical Research Scientist position that will include a faculty appointment at the Clinical or Research Assistant Professor rank; and will be based full-time in our Zambia Center for Applied Health Research and Development (ZCAHRD) country program offices in Lusaka, Zambia. This position requires a minimum two-year commitment and significant experience in managing complex clinical research projects in a developing country. A pediatrician or epidemiologist with developing country clinical research experience is preferred.

Primary responsibility will be to assume the overall leadership as the Co-Principal Investigator of the Zambia site of the Pneumonia Etiology Research for Child Health (PERCH) project, a complex Gates-Funded multicenter study on the etiology of pneumonia in children in developing countries (http://www.jhsph.edu/ivac/perch.html). Participation and leadership in other on-going research and service delivery projects in PMTCT, maternal mortality and mHealth will also be expected.

The CGHD is a university-wide applied research center at Boston University and is administratively housed within the BU School of Public Health.  Its core staff, who have expertise in clinical medicine, public health, demography, anthropology, and economics, devote most of their time to collaborative research projects funded by international donors.  The CGHD’s mission encompasses a range of issues in international health and development.

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be expected to engage in research work with other faculty as appropriate, to generate new research ideas in their area of expertise, and to pursue funding opportunities. If renewed after the initial two-year term (depending on funding availability and performance), it is anticipated that this individual will develop an externally funded research program.

Requirements:

  • M.D. in Pediatrics or PhD in Epidemiology and a thorough understanding of clinical research.
  • Expertise in child survival issues and/or field epidemiology.
  • Background in clinical research or treatment, preferably at study management level in a developing world setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement new projects.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management ability
  • Experience living and/or working in developing countries.
  • An ability and desire to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary group of colleagues

Associate Professor, Health Policy & Financing
Department of International Health

The Department of International Health (DIH) at the Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH) has an opening for a new faculty member at the Associate Professor rank; with expertise and international experience in health policy and financing in developing country settings.

Background:
The DIH, which was established in 1995, currently has approximately 200 concentrators enrolled in the Master of Public Health Program and a robust DrPH program. Members of the DIH faculty are drawn from public health, clinical, and social/behavioral sciences to provide a multidisciplinary faculty that can address the complex issues of health and development and meet the needs of a diverse student body.

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will contribute to a wide range of DIH activities, including teaching, advising, research, consulting, and service in international health. The candidate will be expected to develop curriculum and teach effectively at the Master’s and/or Doctoral level, and may also engage in teaching in external education activities (short courses, certificates, etc.) as well.  Initial DIH teaching responsibilities include the development and instruction of a course on disease burden, health systems organization and performance, and health financing (including donor financing) in the developing world, as well as an advanced course in health policy or health financing. The candidate will also be expected to advise MPH and/or DrPH students, and participate in Department service activities.

The successful candidate will also be expected to be engaged in the research activities of the associated Center for Global Health and Development (CGHD).  He/she will be encouraged to both work within the existing research programs as well as develop new initiatives. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will develop a substantial externally funded research program during the initial three year appointment.

Requirements:

  • Ph.D. or other doctoral degree in a public health discipline, or in a related field such as economics, medicine, policy, or public policy with a focus on health
  • A demonstrated ability to design and implement a course or training program.
  • At least ten years as a policy analyst and/or manager in an organization focusing on international health
  • Experience living and/or working in developing countries is required.
  • An ability and desire to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary group of colleagues
  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and carry out research in this field, and a proven ability to generate grant funding for such research.
  • Demonstrated creativity and initiative in generating new research directions and obtaining funding for this work, on an individual or organizational level.

Chair
Department of Health Policy and Management

Boston University School of Public Health invites accomplished scholars and health policy leaders to apply for the chair of its dynamic and growing Department of Health Policy and Management. BUSPH is poised to contribute importantly to the nationwide transformation of healthcare services delivery and financing.  The next chair will play a leadership role in the School and across the University as BU seeks to strengthen and coordinate its education and research activities in the area of health sector transformation. 

The department consists of 48 faculty members who are experts in the most critical issues and challenges facing the U.S. health care system.  It teaches over 40 courses annually towards both master’s and doctoral degrees and receives $4 million per year in research awards (in addition to VA Center funding). 

The ideal candidate will hold a PhD or MD degree or equivalent, attained the rank of Professor or be eligible to be appointed at that rank; is, or has been, personally funded by an agency, foundation or other extra-mural source to undertake research in a chosen area of inquiry; demonstrated scholarship through teaching awards, publications and extramurally-funded research, and held leadership roles in local, state and national professional groups concerned with issues related to health policy and management.
