Social Work and Public Health (MSW/MPH) PDF Print
Public health social work is an integrated, trans-disciplinary approach to preventing, addressing, and solving social health problems. The discipline draws on both social work and public health theories, frameworks, research, and practice.
  • It's about prevention, not just intervention after problems have occurred;
  • Public health social work uses multiple methods, including research, policy, advocacy, clinical, and macro approaches;
  • Practitioners in the field work across all population levels, from individuals to groups, communities and whole populations;
  • Public health social workers emphasize strengths, resilience, and positive factors to promote health and reduce risk.
The flexible dual degree program makes it possible for students to merge two fields of study into one academic endeavor. Students may choose from 14 combinations of majors and concentrations. Graduates emerge with a rich and relevant educational experience, extensive field experience, and the ability to work in many areas of the social welfare and health care systems. A total of 100 credits is required to complete the program and students may choose to pursue the program on either a full- or a part-time basis.

Applicants must apply to both the School of Public Health and the School of Social Work programs separately and note on their application their choice of the dual MPH/MSW program. Applicants to the dual Public Health/Social Work program may apply to both programs at the same time or may choose to apply to one program first and then apply for the other once at the University. Applicants to each School are held to the same admissions standards as the rest of the applicant pool. For specific application requirements for the MPH program, please visit the Admissions website.
