Health Care Management Specialization The Master of Public Health program, with a Concentration in Health Policy and Management, provides students with the skills and areas of knowledge necessary to formulate sound, creative solutions to complex problems in the health care system. Students examine the link between health policy and effective management, incorporating studies in health program administration and organization, health policy and planning, and financial analysis for health care. This degree is appropriate for students who are interested in highly responsible careers as either managers of health care organizations or analysts for public or private organizations involved in the financing, delivery or evaluation of health care services. Health care management aims to improve the effectiveness, efficiency, and decency of care. Using a mixture of technical, conceptual, and inter-personal skills, managers organize human and material resources to deliver preventive, curative, and palliative services. Most managers work for hospitals, physician practices, nursing homes, and other organized caregivers. Some managers directly support clinical care while others are responsible for admissions, billing, human resources, and other services that are more remote from caregiving. In the health care management specialization you will develop conceptual, analytical, and practical knowledge that can facilitate your entry into the health management job market. Credit requirements. Completing a specialization requires course work beyond what is needed for the HPM concentration, as well as a specialization-related practicum. You will complete the health care management specialization by taking twelve or more credits in approved courses. Since four of these are credits already required to satisfy the HPM distribution requirement in management, you would need to add eight credits from the approved courses shown on lists below. (These may include a course also used to satisfy the distribution requirement in another area.) Essentially, elective credits are used to complete the specialization. Completion of the health care management specialization will be noted on your transcript.

Health care policy aims to improve coverage, lower costs, boost appropriateness and quality of care, and reshape the numbers, types, and locations of various caregivers to better address patients' needs. Policy-makers set goals and then provide money and establish regulations to advance those goals. While most health care policy is made by federal, state, and local governments, it is influenced politically by caregivers, employers and unions, insurers and HMOs, patient advocates, and other groups. Sometimes, it is informed by researchers' evidence and analysis. In the health policy specialization, you will develop conceptual, analytical, and practical knowledge that can facilitate your entry into the health policy job market. Credit requirements.
