Biostatistics Black Women's Health Study The Black Women's Health Study (BWHS) is the largest follow-up study of African-American women yet undertaken; 64,500 black women, ages 21-69, from all areas of the US enrolled in the study in 1995. Data Coordinating Center DCC is a data management resource center providing data system development as well as questionnaire and case-report form design and implementation, study protocols, data entry and management, and statistical, database, and Web-based programming. Framingham Heart Study This internationally renowned study, established in 1948, seeks to understand the underpinnings of cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death and serious illness in the United States. Genetics Analysis Workshop A collaborative effort among genetic epidemiologists and statistical geneticists, this project develops, evaluates, and compares statistical genetic methods through data sets such as those used in the Framingham Heart Study. Massachusetts Veterans Epidemiology Research & Information Center (MAVERIC) MAVERIC provides on-site expertise in population-based study design, implementation, and statistical analysis for all types of epidemiologic research. Superfund Research Program at Boston University The Superfund program at BUSPH shares the results of its interdisciplinary research on environmental impacts of improperly managed hazardous wastes. Community Health Sciences Healthy Public Housing Initiative The Healthy Public Housing Initiative is a Boston-based, community-centered project designed to engage public housing residents in a collaborative process to improve the health and quality of life of residents, as well as building conditions. Join Together A nationally recognized resource, Join Together offers information, strategic planning assistance, and leadership development in community-based advocacy of effective alcohol and drug policy, prevention, and treatment. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Public Health Research This project aims to identify the public health problems and emerging concerns of the LGBT community, through interdisciplinary scientific research, as well as to disseminate key information to health professionals and the LGBT community itself. Partners in Health and Housing Prevention Research Center By engaging residents of public housing directly in effective community-centered programs, the PRC seeks to improve the overall health and well-being within public housing developments. Environmental Health The Exposure Biology Research Group The Exposure Biology Research Group (EBRG) is an interdisciplinary research group in the department of Environmental Health whose primary research focus is on the use of biological markers to assess environmental and occupational exposures via multiple pathways with respect to exposure-related disease. Sherr Laboratory Part of the School's Department of Environmental Health, the Sherr Laboratory applies cellular and molecular technologies to research in the areas of basic and applied science. Caregiving and Healthy Aging Research Our research group is conducting epidemiologic studies on how psychosocial factors influence physical health and functioning in community-dwelling older adults, hip fracture patients, and adults at-risk of arthritis. Health Law, Bioethics and Human Rights Boston Center for Refugee Health and Human Rights BCRHHR provides comprehensive medical, psychological, social, and legal services to refugees and survivors of torture, focusing on community as a vehicle for recovery and healing. Medicine and the Holocaust Study of the role of medicine during the holocaust. Focusing on racial hygiene, eugenics, euthanasia, and genocide. Complementary and Alternative Medicine Study of the use of integrative medical approaches to treatment of underserved populations with a particular focus on refugees. Research includes the use of traditional healing methods, botanicals, mind-body techniques, and traditional Chinese medicine. Refugees and Survivors of Torture Study of the epidemiology and treatment of survivors from Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Clinical Bioethics An analysis of ethics case consultations performed at the Boston Medical Center dealing with end-of-life care, reproductive issues, capacity, futility, and allocation of scarce resources. Health and Human Rights Ongoing research on the inextricable link between human rights and health. Focusing on the right to health, international humanitarian law, civil and political rights and economic, social and cultural rights. Treatment of Hunger Strikers Study Study of current practices in US detention centers (including Guantanamo), and US federal and state prisons with a view to documenting existing practices and legal norms, and making policy recommendations for change. Emergency Preparedness and Standards of Care Study of the applicable “standard of care” for first responders and whether or not a new “crisis” standard of care is needed or desirable to protect first responders from liability. Personalized Medicine An exploration of the many meanings of the term, and the implications of integrating “personalized [genomic] medicine” into clinical practice in the US. Military Medical Ethics Study A study of existing military medical ethics doctrines, problematic situations, the role of “dual loyalty” and whether and when a military physician can violate medical ethics out of military necessity. Patient Rights and Human Rights A continuing study of the rights of patients in the US in the hospital and out-patient contexts and the influence of international human rights in setting the patient rights agenda in the US. Program in Health Law and Human Rights A joint venture with the Public Health Regulations Analysis Center, the National School of Public Health, the New University of Lisbon, Portugal. Federal Health Reform Ongoing studies of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, including the constitutionality of the individual mandate. Health Information Technology Privacy and Security A study of laws governing the privacy and security of health information to inform the development of a Massachusetts Health Information Exchange and meaningful use of HIT by Massachusetts providers. Legal Implications of Wellness Programs An analysis of potential reciprocal interactions between wellness programs and laws governing public and private health insurance and employment. Health Policy and Management Assessing Patient Navigation Activities This project aims to eliminate far-ranging ethnic, socioeconomic, and geographical barriers to seeking, obtaining, and completing diagnosis and treatment within the health care environment. Center for the Assessment of Pharmaceutical Practices CAPP is a consortium of researchers and educators dedicated to advancing the safe and effective use of therapeutic medications. Health & Disability Research Institute The Health and Disability Research Institute is engaged in research activities to promote health and improve the lives of people with disabilities. HDR collaborates on research projects with groups at Boston University and with national and international organizations. Health & Disability Working Group (HDWG) This working group conducts research, technical assistance, and training to improve the delivery of medical, behavioral, and support services to the disabled and chronically ill. Health Reform Program This program seeks practical solutions to problems in health care reform, such as the cost of prescription drugs, the disproportionate closing of hospitals in minority and lower-income communities, and how to assure affordable health care for all. Pay-for-Performance Research Program A component of the Health Policy and Management department, this initiative serves nationally as a resource for health plans, employer groups, providers, and researchers in assessing the outcomes of incentive programs for providers.
