Academics

Academic Departments
The mission of the Boston University School of Public Health is to improve the health of local, national and international populations, particularly the disadvantaged, underserved and vulnerable. The School's seven academic departments are constantly expanding and refining programs to meet the demands of the field, while maintaining our commitment to our core mission: to protect and promote the public's health through education, research, and community service.

Our skills-focused curriculum helps graduates take what they learn from the classroom to the community.  Faculty introduce their cutting-edge research and service experiences into their teaching to create an up-to-date and relevant curriculum.  Students and faculty collaborate on scholarship through fellowships and research assistantships, and students integrate their new skills and knowledge during a practicum experience, which can be undertaken either domestically or abroad.

A variety of disciplines are represented in many departments; faculty are trained in economics, nursing, anthropology, medicine, mathematics, law, psychology, biochemistry, toxicology, urban planning, sociology, statistics, epidemiology and an array of other fields.  Many of the School's research centers and service efforts cross departmental lines, encouraging interdisciplinary service, research, and educational opportunities for students.

The School has seven academic departments: Biostatistics; Environmental Health; Epidemiology; Health Law, Bioethics, and Human Rights; Health Policy and Management; International Health; and Community Health Sciences.  Community Health Sciences offers two concentrations:  maternal and child health and social and behavioral sciences.
